Meeting of the President of NALEC and members of the US Congress discuss budget support against infectious diseases
Yesterday, March 9 and today, in the US capital Washington DC, our beloved president of the National Evangelical Latino Coalition, better known by its acronym in English NALEC, Dr. Gabriel Salguero in the company of members of the movement of Global Fund, have met with Senators and Representatives of the US National Congress. The purpose of this meeting was to advocate for the continued financial support of the global fights against HIV, Tuberculosis and Malaria, by the US General Budget .
During his visit, Dr. Salguero expressed, "Collaborating with The Global Fund in favor of budget support against infectious diseases is part of NALEC's commitment to vulnerable communities around the world." In addition, he added that, "The gospel calls us to be in solidarity with those who suffer and this effort in Congress is part of our pastoral and accompaniment work."
The members of our associated entity NALEC together with the members of the Global Fund have advocated before the American Congress, so that the funds that are granted by the US government are part of the foreign aid budget. All funds provided by the United States are matched by donors around the world at a 2-for-1 rate. Thus, the financial leverage of the United States helps influence countries and donors around the world to invest in health.
The Global Fund is a global movement to defeat HIV, tuberculosis and malaria and ensure a healthier, safer and more equitable future for all. The Global Fund invests about $4 billion a year to fight the deadliest infectious diseases, challenge the injustice that fuels them, and strengthen health systems in more than 100 countries. Since its inception in 2002, the Global Fund has helped save more than 50 million lives around the world. NALEC celebrates that the work of The Global Fund benefits many parts of the world including Latin America.
